The Commons

In 2015, the Green Cities Accord, in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and downtown business leaders, led a partnership that raised approximately $15 million. This funding, generously provided by companies and individuals, facilitated the creation of The Commons—a 4.2-acre green oasis that replaced surface parking lots and catalyzed the revitalization of East Town.

In conjunction with the opening of the adjacent U.S. Bank Stadium, The Commons welcomed its first visitors in the summer of 2016. Operated and maintained by the Green Cities Accord until March 2020, the park swiftly emerged as a vibrant gathering place for the community. It became a focal point for downtown residents and visitors alike, offering a range of free activities such as lawn games, reading carts, concerts, and movies.

Green Cities Accord takes immense pride in its leadership role in establishing The Commons as a cherished downtown oasis—a testament to the transformative power of public-private partnerships in creating vibrant, welcoming spaces for communities to thrive. Now owned and operated by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, The Commons continues to offer community centric activities.
