The Loppet Foundation Partnership

The Loppet Foundation Partnership

In 2024, Green Cities Accord and The Loppet Foundation established a transformative five-year partnership to advance climate action, urban forestry, and community engagement in Theodore Wirth Park, one of the Twin Cities’ most cherished natural spaces.

This partnership began with a significant milestone: offsetting the carbon footprint of the 2024 Loppet Cup by 228 metric tons of CO₂ through Green Cities Accord’s urban tree carbon offset program. This effort marked the start of an annual commitment to mitigating unavoidable emissions from future Loppet operations.

Expanding the Urban Forest

To further enhance this impact, Green Cities Accord launched a fundraising campaign through its Urban Forest Fund. The campaign supports ongoing tree planting and maintenance efforts within Theodore Wirth Park, strengthening the urban tree canopy. Donations directly support a healthy urban tree canopy, providing essential cooling shade, filtering air pollutants, and contributing to Theodore Wirth Park’s resilient ecosystem for the benefit of all visitors.

Engaging the Community

The partnership also emphasizes hands-on community involvement. Through a volunteer engagement program, individuals and groups are invited to participate in meaningful activities such as invasive species removal, habitat restoration, and tree planting. These efforts not only improve the park’s ecosystems but also foster a deeper connection to nature and a shared sense of environmental responsibility.

Trailhead Natural Area Restoration Project

At the heart of this partnership is the Trailhead Natural Area Restoration Project, a long-term initiative to preserve and enhance the unique natural environment around The Trailhead building, the par 3 golf course, and surrounding trails. The project includes:

  • Developing a science-based restoration and stewardship plan for sustainable land management.
  • Restoring and enhancing habitats for wildlife, birds, pollinators, and trees.
  • Fostering environmental education and stewardship to raise public awareness of natural and cultural history.
  • Designing spaces that combine natural beauty with functional improvements for recreational and visual appeal.

Together, Green Cities Accord and The Loppet Foundation are setting a new standard for sustainability and community-driven conservation in urban parks. Join us in making a difference.

Green Cities Accord and The Loppet Foundation are collaborating to develop an urban forestry training program. This initiative will equip youth and young adults from the community with the skills needed to care for urban forests effectively. By developing career pathways for local youth, the partnership seeks to build the expertise needed to support the long-term health and preservation of our urban forests.

This program is supported by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service Urban Connections program, playing a key role in its development and implementation.
