American Society of Landscape Architects Partners with Green Minneapolis to Achieve Climate Action Goals

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ALSA) has partnered with Green Minneapolis, an innovator in urban tree carbon offsets, to offset emissions generated by its ASLA 2023 Conference, which was held October 27-30 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. ASLA has committed to purchasing 1,500 tons of carbon dioxide emission offsets, in addition to pursuing its near-term goal of reducing emissions 20 percent by 2024.

As background, ASLA released its first Sustainable Event Impact Assessment, a comprehensive gap analysis of its 2022 Conference on Landscape Architecture. The assessment provides a baseline accounting of energy used and greenhouse gas emissions and waste generated, which ASLA will use to measure and improve its environmental and social impacts on an annual basis. Based on these findings from last year’s conference, ASLA has committed to event sustainability strategies that will improve the outcomes of its 2023 Conference.

The Loppet Foundation Partners with Green Minneapolis to Offset 2024 Loppet Cup Carbon Footprint

Bringing the World to Wirth: The Loppet Foundation will host the 2024 Loppet Cup, The COOP FIS Cross Country World Cup in Minneapolis over President’s Day weekend, Feb. 17-19, 2024. The Loppet Foundation and Share Winter will serve as hosts of the Loppet Cup, taking place on the Loppet’s world class cross country ski trails – setting the stage for one of the only World Cups to be held in a major metropolitan area – and the first on U.S. soil in two decades.

The Loppet Foundation intends to offset a portion of the carbon emissions generated by the 2024 Loppet Cup, with carbon offsets purchased from Green Minneapolis through its carbon offset program, part of the Twin Cities Climate Resiliency Initiative. Help the Loppet Foundation reduce the carbon footprint of the Loppet Cup by contributing to the carbon offset initiative.

Peavey Plaza Wins Awards for Design and Programming

Peavey Plaza won a 2023 Honor Award for General Design from the American Society of Landscape Architects for the renovation of the historical landmark. Green Minneapolis spearheaded the $10 million fundraising campaign to revitalize Peavey Plaza, with contributions from the City of Minneapolis, State of Minnesota, Target Corporation and many corporate and private donors. The design team, led by Coen+Partners, facilitated a project that celebrates the Plaza’s historic modernist design, enhances sustainability and makes the Plaza accessible to all.

Peavey Plaza also won a 2023 Greening & Public Realm Award for Best Activated Space from Mpls Downtown Improvement District. Thank you to everyone who participated in Summer at Peavey Plaza! – a series of events, from live music to dance, including our 2023 artist in residence, Phil Thompson – that made Peavey Plaza the Twin Cities’ best place to go for performances that were free and open to all. Summer at Peavey Plaza! brought over 17,000 people downtown to enjoy 140 free events at Peavey Plaza.

Green Minneapolis Completes Five-Year Peavey Plaza Operating Contract

After a successful five year partnership, Green Minneapolis’s contract with the City of Minneapolis to fundraise, operate, maintain and program Peavey Plaza will conclude at the end of December, 2023. Informed by the organization’s strategic plan, Green Minneapolis’s board opted to not renew its Peavey Plaza operating contract with the City in order to focus its efforts on expanding its Twin Cities Climate Resiliency Initiative – an ambitious program to address the impacts of climate change on urban residents by protecting and expanding the Twin Cities urban tree canopy.
